The Kohn Gallery was established by Michael Kohn in 1985, and has since presented historically significant exhibitions alongside exciting contemporary artists in hopes to establish a greater art historical continuum. On August 11th, The Kohn Gallery continues this tradition with _Jess – Secret Compartments,_ the first posthumous survey of work from the seminal gay Bay Area artist Jess, who passed away in 2004.
Following his career throughout its many phases, from 1950s-era _Romantic_ and _Erotic_ painting series to his renowned _Paste-Up_ series, including a monumental pencil on paper work now in the collection at SFMOMA. The _Paste-Up_ series showcased Jess at his most omnivorous, adapting imagery from poetry, mysticism, pop culture and literary references to create lively, exuberant work, all the more daring considering the comparatively stifled era in which it was created.
_Jess – Secret Compartments_ will be on view at The Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles, 1227 N Highland Ave Until September 7, 2018.
