YungVV traverses genres, uses various production methods, and unleashes straight-up bangers throughout seven songs.
EPs might only be a taster of what an artist has to offer, but when it comes to New Jersey rapper YungVV, his debut, Extended Player, already feels like a complete accomplishment.
The 26-year-old rapper started developing a fanbase in 2019 after single releases on SoundCloud and other streaming platforms. He’s been working on this EP for a while now - and has promised that it will offer fans a newer, more varied version of the artist.
Variety is - most definitely - the name of the game on Numb2Pain. There’s a lot to love in these songs. From the intensity of the production on ‘Presi Presi’ - with its retro, video game-sounding blips and beeps; to the vibrant lo-fi trap of ‘Pop Shxt’; to the bouncing, confrontational rap verses on ‘Go Up’; to the audacious, sexualized lyrics on ‘FYE.’ The EP reflects an artist trying to do everything at once - trying to capture all the various beats and lyrics as they race through his head - and the glory of listening to it is that he’s pretty much succeeding.
For context, YungVV’s songwriting process often involves him sitting in his car at night, vibing to different beats, and then knocking songs out quickly in the recording booth. Everything about his music feels like an artist trying not to let the beauty of a good beat or turn-of-phrase pass him by.
Excellent stuff.
