The way into Andy’s is through what at first glance would appear to be a rare sight these days - a traditional newsstand, which tells you a fair amount about the place before you’ve even come inside. Anderson .Paak opened the club with nightlife brothers Mark and Jonnie Houston in the old Doheny Room on Santa Monica Boulevard, and upon entry, you are immediately hit with a ode to R&B and jazz lounges that it pays homage to. On Casablanca Tuesdays, the talent roster has featured everyone from Victoria Justice, G-Eazy, Busta Rhymes and Chance the Rapper, along with a steady stream of artists still on their way up.
This Tuesday, the night belonged to Cybèle. In a showcase produced by GAEA Agency, the rising singer-songwriter played to a mix of LA creatives and music industry veterans, including multi-Grammy-winning producer, writer and artist Al Sherrod Lambert, creator Holly Scarfone, and other acclaimed music artists like Jeremy Thurber, Taharka Chango among the crowd.

Opening with “Ensorcelée,” (the literal English translation is bewitched or enchanted) an airy, uptempo R&B track that moves between French and English as a fluid reminder that this is an artist born in Paris, raised in Beijing, and Los Angeles. Setting the tone for everything that followed, Cybèle showed that while she is an artist early in her story she is already sure of her sound.
What stays with us after the performance finished was the voice. Cybèle can go big, and she did, but she also knows when to pull back, settling into something soft and soulful before letting a chorus open up. The orchestral arrangements behind her giving the songs a cinematic that felt more concert hall than speakeasy. By the end of the night, the crowd was calling for more, and Cybèle came back out for an encore that let her voice truly showcase an artist at work.
