“Thawing Out” displays Andii Styron’s tasteful and timeless approach. She is in good company. Within the whole of the collection, nods to groups like the Fleet Foxes and Weyes Blood pop on through. Much like those groups she embraces the grandeur. Virtually dripping with lovely detail, the instrumental variety proves to be exceptional. At times the genre-jumping adds to the thrilling element, for beyond rock, fragments of country, the blues, gospel, soul, and pop enter into the fray in a way that is distinctly her own.

A spirit of determination blasts the collection off for “Heavy” certainly lives up to its title. From the interplay amongst the band to her towering presence, the piece sets the mood for what follows. The uncanny joy of “In My Own Way” draws the listener into a truly blissed out experience one that encourages getting in touch with one’s innermost emotions. “You Thought” forgoes with the rhythm section almost entirely, choosing instead to let the atmosphere reign supreme. Intimacy abounds in the hushed awe of the rather subdued scope of the work. Little hints of funk glide through with confidence on the gorgeousness of “(Tell Me) How It Feels”. For that final burst of energy “Slip of The Tongue” ends it all up on a high note going for a hint of optimism.

Quite an epic undertaking Andii Styron pours her heart and soul into “Thawing Out” imbuing these small vignettes with their own sense of life.
