Trombone, latex, tassel and lasso are all apart of [You Can Call Me Sir’s](https://www.youcancallmesir.net) new music video “Jackalope.” An electronic-rock collective features Louisiana-bred LA based dominatrix Cristy Michel and Matt Petty. The duo explains that “its about manipulative people who use charm to lure you into their world and then leave you feeling obsessed and empty. They create a narrative about themselves that isn’t real (like a Jackalope). It’s just an American myth and the result of rogue taxidermy.”
Directed by [Cassils](https://www.instagram.com/cassilsartist/?hl=it), the revered performance artist who focuses on gay male aesthetics, the inspiration came from “the genre of queer cinema from the early 90’s that was political, but didn’t take itself too seriously and evaded the social justice warrior finger wag of the present moment.” The music video references spaghetti westerns and exploitation films a la John Waters and Bruce La Bruce.
You Can Call Me Sir explores American Mythologies of old, meandering through rodeos and badlands with a modern twist. The music ambles into the disco by imaginatively incorporating trombone instrumentation. The band plays with captured samples, lyrics and traditional rhythms to build new works which are all informed by their lived queer experiences growing up in the haunted swamplands of the American South.
