Weekend Recall | Julian Lamadrid

by Morgan Vickery

Julian Lamadrid is the Dubai-born, New York-based artist creating soundtracks to his favorite films and literature. The 21-year-old grew up on Elvis, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed, inspiring an eclectic mix of his artistry. Shying away from social media driven “clickbait” stars, Julian experiments with new wave, bedroom pop, hip hop, ‘80s synth, and British rock.

His latest release, “Neon” demonstrates his vision of the future of pop. Inspired by the film, “Good Time,” and television series, “The Sopranos,” “Neon” is a youthful trip, especially in the accompanied, self-directed video. “Neon” is one of twelve tracks to be included on Julian’s forthcoming record, Mala Noche, out later this year. Today, Lamadrid shares a weekend of his life in the big apple.

The weekend started on a plane, from LA back to NYC where I live. I was sat between a crying baby and a man who coughed the entire flight. I feel bad for the guy but honestly, my fury prevailed and so I spent the entire flight in a miserable state.

I took an Uber on the way home from the airport with my manager and was cheered up by the fact that I live in such a wonderful and exciting city. Coming back to New York always fills me with such joy. Not that i don’t like LA, it’s just New York has this... okay yeah I don’t really like LA.

Upon arriving at my apartment I realized that all my plants had died. It was a truly sad moment. To cheer myself up I went to a nearby Plant shop and bought this beauty. Her name is Mafalda.

My father, who happens to be a pilot, coincidentally had a flight to NYC that landed in the evening, and so He met up with us all at the William Vale hotel rooftop for sundowners. Here he is looking excited by the conversation, or perhaps he’s just thinking about something shocking, who knows what goes on in that mans mind?

As Fitzgerald once said, "First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.”. The drink had definitely taken me at this point, we ended up in my apartment, doing all the fun activities young people do. Later that night we went dancing at Jupiter Disco. Fun club but honestly by that point I was absolutely exhausted.

The next day we woke up and all met for a late lunch and a bit of “Hair-of-the-dog”, and no I do not mean actual dog hair, it’s an expression. Look it up.

We then wandered around SOHO with nothing to do (something I do all too often). Here is me posing and trying my best to look cool.

I changed my shirt and walked back to the river for sunset. I don’t know why exactly but open bodies of water actually bring me great peace. I personally feel that if I was stranded on a raft in the middle of the sea with nothing but ocean in all directions, I would feel a real tranquility within. That’s just me.

The next day, I literally saw a guy wearing this shirt in the subway. So for those of you who don’t know me, I am a MASSIVE Daft Punk fan, and when I saw this shirt, I had to have it. I asked him how much it would cost to buy it off his back, he named his price, and the rest is history. I bought a shirt off a stranger in the subway, it was a beautiful and slightly unhygienic moment. He looked like a clean guy though, but yeah I washed it as soon as I got home.
