The Elements Issue: Obscene City

The Elements Issue: Obscene City

Oh the parties we had!

As Gandhi probably said, “In times of great difficulty, when the world looks bleak and the challenges ahead seem insurmountable, the only response is unabashed, unmitigated hedonism, and lots of champagne.” And so we have bravely soldiered through a trying year, refusing to let 2016 get the best of us. It’s just who we are.

As the year rolled towards its conclusion, we teamed up with Vionnet to tuck our Nocturne Issue into bed, joined by our ever-lovely cover star Nicole Kidman for a glittering dinner at so-hip-it-almost-hurts Catch LA in West Hollywood, for a delicious meal and some savored sips of cocktails courtesy of Santo Diablo Mezcal. A few nights later across town at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel we joined with Prada and a glittering ensemble for elk tartare, to view the premiere of David O. Russel’s new Prada-commissioned film Fast Forward.

Checking our PETA-approved faux-minks for the red-eye to New York, we headed to the Guggenheim, for two effusive evenings at Dior’s Guggenheim International Gala. Then back to L.A., just in time to celebrate our friend Allie Teilz’s new line of gender-bending rock’n’roll-inflected luxury suits.

Next, we hopped aboard Flaunt Force One and jet-setted to Miami to host an Art Basel video art extravaganza with de Pury de Pury and Goga Ashkenazi, at the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center. Here we celebrated the limited-edition Severity issue, and sipped on delicious Virginia Black cocktails, whilst enchanted by the films of an embarrassment of phenomenal artists including: Marina Abramović, Doug Aitken, Ed Atkins, Darren Almond, Heike Baranowsky, Jonathan Horowitz, Antti Laitinen, Jon Rafman, Rachel Rose, Tomás Saraceno, Fiona Tan, and Wolfgang Tillmans. After soaking in the incredible video art, we hit the dance floor to the bionic beat of Viktoria Modesta, and gawked at the fabulous art rug installation of Hossein Rezvani.

A few evenings later we cycled across to the Faena Hotel’s Saxony Bar for the launch event of 2018’s FORMA Design Fair that will take place in Mexico City, in a knees-up supported by NeueHouse, with tasty cocktails by Jose Cuervo.

Back in L.A. we unfolded a final extravagance that launched the Jeffrey Rüdes men’s collection, with our hosts for the evening, this issue’s featurees Jordan Clarkson and Stephen Dorff, and with a fellow co-host in the form of past Flaunt cover star, Luke Grimes. We kicked off at Ron Herman in West Hollywood, where the Jeffrey Rüdes line is currently on display, and then took a black car to Delilah for a supper that pushed the good times deep towards the dawn.

And so, despite it all, we cannot in good faith fully sign on with the #fuck2016 crowd, for there were pearls aplenty to soften the blows that the news brought to us on a daily basis, and we will head into 2017 with high hopes for a happy year.
