Kelcie Schofield is the founder and designer of the contemporary clothing label, [CIE Denim](https://www.ciedenim.com/). Conceived in 2018, Kelcie fills a gap in her industry by reusing and reworking pre-existing denim as well as solidifying a new and less toxic manufacturing process. Whether it’s restructured silhouettes, deadstock materials, or [Naveena Mills](https://www.naveenadenimmills.com/)’ cutting edge Horizon fabric, CIE represents the future of manufactured denim in our increasingly destructive global climate. In addition to responsible garments, Kelcie melds this effort with creative design applications— each piece one of a kind. With flipped pockets on the ankle hem, an upside-down jean fit, and color-blocked seams, each design reflects a unique twist on traditional denim norms. Post Spring/ Summer 2020 presentation, **_Flaunt_** spoke with Schofield to discuss the past, present, and future of CIE Denim. ![](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bb3cc7a88e544f7866c3_image-asset.jpeg) **_Tell us about the inception of CIE._** CIE was started from our two core silhouettes - our upside-down jeans and shorts. I wanted to create an item that made heads turn (literally) but could also be worn day to day. **_How do you aim to be a new and unique voice in the industry of denim?_** Every piece we come out with should have something that gives it an extra spark. We’re here to make unique investment pieces that you feel good about buying.  ![](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bb3cc7a88e544f7866c7_image-asset.jpeg) **_How do you view sustainability as an essential component of the current fashion climate?_** That’s exactly how I view it - an essential component. Sustainability, for me, is a non-negotiable for any new business to find success in the current climate. Since I launched CIE in 2018, there has been a noticeable change in the industry and how customers view their clothing.  **_What are your efforts in regards to sustainability? Explain your “slow-fashion” philosophy._** I have two sustainable mediums I work with right now. The first and the essence of what built CIE is reworked vintage. Even for our knits, we reworked Hanes T-shirts. Using fully recycled materials creates an exciting challenge for each style that I enjoy working through. For the sustainably manufactured denim that we source through Naveena Mills, we do fully “new” jeans made entirely from the Naveena fabric as well as combining the new fabric with vintage materials.  ![](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bb3cc7a88e544f7866cb_image-asset.jpeg) **_How do you believe denim will evolve in years to come?_** I think sustainability will continue to be a driving force in the denim industry. My hope is that companies established and emerging will embrace responsible practices. It’s slowly transitioning, but it’s not quite there yet.  **_What’s next for CIE?_** More learning and growing! We plan to push the brand into unexplored territories, whether it’s new materials or new silhouettes.  ![CIE DENIM X FLAUNT MAG 11.19-30.JPG](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c346b607eaa09d9189a870/1574054334127-672FUCN6X1G79MFNG11Z/CIE+DENIM+X+FLAUNT+MAG+11.19-30.JPG) ![CIE DENIM X FLAUNT MAG 11.19-16.JPG](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c346b607eaa09d9189a870/1574054337363-VQS0VZGCP4282KVKFYDV/CIE+DENIM+X+FLAUNT+MAG+11.19-16.JPG) ![CIE DENIM X FLAUNT MAG 11.19-10.JPG](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c346b607eaa09d9189a870/1574054346276-ASO1XIWOY6WDR36MBRFY/CIE+DENIM+X+FLAUNT+MAG+11.19-10.JPG) #block-yui\_3\_17\_2\_1\_1574053506000\_32696 .sqs-gallery-block-grid { margin-right: -10px; } #block-yui\_3\_17\_2\_1\_1574053506000\_32696 .sqs-gallery-block-grid .sqs-gallery-design-grid-slide .margin-wrapper { margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; } * * * Clothing: [CIE Denim](https://www.ciedenim.com/) SS20 Photography by: [Phoenix Johnson](https://www.instagram.com/phojoh/) Model: [Lyn Hersh](https://www.instagram.com/geishagrl/)
