Hawaiian native Collin Desha, or as he is better known, Low Hum, is releasing a new single that pays tribute to his homeland. “Only If You Say So” dropped on February 23, 2024, ahead of Low Hum’s third album, Terra Incognita.

The instrumentals in the single are reminiscent of Low Hum’s signature indie rock style which is thematically and emotionally tied to Hawaii. The track is dark and understated at the beginning, building to a climax of intense percussion and frenzied strings. “Only If You Say So” reflects Low Hum’s conflicting feelings about following his career versus the desire to return home.

“This song personifies Hawaii,” he said. “I'm always thinking about going back to Hawaii someday but I continue to feel like it will only be if she says so and gives me a sign. So much of how I approach life comes from my connection to Hawaiian culture and there’s just nothing quite like being there, experiencing the energy of the land and ocean."

As a thirteenth-generation Hawaiian residing in Los Angeles, Low Hum feels a strong pull toward his homeland. Directed by James Kid, the music video for “Only If You Say So” was filmed on Oahu and The Big Island to capture Low Hum’s dream of returning home.

Kid commented, “Similar to love, Hawaii is as beautiful as it is chaotic—a complicated but fulfilling beast that can clasp itself tightly around your psyche. Collin experiences this through a battle with his own subconscious, which tries to repel him from his dream, warning him not to stay too long. He refuses. This video reflects the emotional state of longing for something, even though you know deep down you must move on."

Low Hum’s yearning for home became stronger after a devastating robbery in 2022 during his headline tour. He was forced to cancel the remaining dates of the tour and lost all of the music he had been preparing for his upcoming album. Starting over from scratch and dealing with the emotional fallout from this incident made Low Hum reflect on his roots. His third album will encapsulate all of the transformative, emotional, and creative journeys he’s experienced since then.

Terra Incognita will be Low Hum’s first project since 2021, and his fans have been eagerly awaiting new music. “Meet Me In the Sky,” released last month, was the first single for the new album. “Meet Me In the Sky” is a more upbeat track, while “Only If You Say So” shows listeners the darker, more introspective side to Terra Incognita.

Terra Incognita is Low Hum’s third, and highly anticipated album, following Room to Breathe and Nonfiction. As each track seeks to blend harmonious vocals with pop and synths, Low Hum pulls in his Hawaiian roots while also drawing fans in with his unique presence. Listeners can check out Terra Incognita and many of Low Hum’s popular songs, including “Comatose” and “I Don’t Know Me Like You Do,” on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music. With millions of listens and views already, it’s clear that Low Hum’s trajectory is headed up as fans continue to resonate with his unique sound.
