Lafayette 148 is celebrating Women’s History Month with the launch of their Martha Madigan Capsule Collection and exhibition, paying tribute to the pioneering artist’s rich creative legacy. Martha Madigan famously adopted experimental photographic techniques in the 1970s, harnessing the power of the natural world as both the medium and the subject matter of her work. Her cyanotypes and eco-prints, made with completely natural materials, are profound meditations on the ephemeral beauty of nature.
Lafayette 148 recently collaborated with Martha Madigan’s daughters, Claire Khodara and Grace Fuller Marroquin, to produce a limited-edition capsule collection inspired by their mother’s life and work. The line includes a pajama set and scarf made from Italian silk twill and a kaftan in semi-sheer voile, each printed with one of Madigan’s iconic botanical designs. "Our mother saw beauty in every corner, in every inch of the world," the sisters share. "She made a mark, and so we feel a deep sense of devotion to continuing her legacy and spreading her love and light."
Designing this collection was an opportunity for Lafayette 148 to demonstrate their longstanding commitment to the arts, and women artists in particular. Emily Smith, the brand’s creative director, reveals what inspired her to embark on this project: “My own guiding light while creating this collection was the thought of introducing even more women to Martha’s beautiful depictions of nature, and through wearing the pieces we’ve designed using her prints, adding their own presence and their own passage of time to what is already an important and inspiring artistic legacy.”
The Lafayette 148 x Martha Madigan Capsule Collection is available to purchase exclusively during the month of March at Lafayette 148’s Greene Street, Madison Avenue, and Beverly Hills boutiques, as well as online. 20% of the capsule collection’s sales will be donated to the Martha Madigan Foundation, providing funds for art education. In addition, a curated selection of Martha Madigan’s work will be on display at Lafayette 148’s Greene Street flagship store from March 13 through early April. Emily Smith, Claire Khodara, and Grace Fuller Marroquin will be co-hosting a VIP cocktail party on March 13 to celebrate the exhibition opening and the collection’s debut.
