Jewelry designer Elie Top was the accessories director for Lanvin for 15 years after designing fashion jewelry for Yves Saint Laurent. His own jewelry maison was launched in 2015 with the highly original orrery-inspired Mécaniques Célestes collection. His 2016 collection is called Étoiles Mystérieuses and continues to use movable stellar elements. Top spoke to Flaunt.

What first attracted you to design?

Everything started with a pen. I'm a sketch person. It's the pleasure of sketching combined with the pleasure of building.

Favorite spot to be inspired?

Paris, ever and ever.

Can you describe yourself in four words?

A jacket, a striped shirt, a knitted tie, a moustache.

If reincarnation is real, what would you like to come back as?

One of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis.

What was the first piece of clothing you ever made?

I started designing jewels at Saint Laurent with Alber Elbaz. They were large horn cuffs inspired by Nancy Cunard.
