Looks and Lookbooks from AALTO’s FW16 collection

Part of our emerging designer feature from the Oh La La Land Issue

Transplanted from Finland to Paris by creator Tuomas Merikoski, AALTO has garnered major attention in the fashion world since launching in 2015. With its young and edgy Finnish style finding traction on the Parisian boulevards and runways, this year AALTO was a dual finalist for both the ANDAM Award, and the LVMH Prize—major accolades in French and international fashion.

What was the first piece of clothing you ever made?

Handmade single-button double-breasted suit in burgundy/orange herringbone wool cloth. It went well with my haircut and sunglasses and I wanted to wear something special to my bro’s wedding.

Do you think of your work as art or craftsmanship? How do you balance form and function as a designer?

I think it would be pretentious to say that fashion is art. Form and function has a real importance so I consider my work more as industrial design, with functional and artistic expression combined in clothes but also as a whole in collections.

Can you describe yourself in four words?

Calm & crazy, thoughtful & risk-taking, loyal & ambitious, and Finnish & wanna-be-black.
