As a child, British actor Sam Claflin dreamt of playing professional soccer. But life’s jukes took him another direction—after shattering one of his ankles in a friendly match, he opted to pursue acting. Six years later, having graduated from London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he started putting casting directors on their heels, ambitious and on side of Hollywood stardom. Active since 2010, the magnetic Claflin landed lead parts in big-screen fantasy adventures as Philip, the Mermaid-lovestruck missionary, in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011); as William, Kristen Stewart’s kidnapper-turned-Prince-Charming, in Snow White and the Huntsman (2012); and as trident-and-woven-net-wielding Finnick Odair in the final three installments of The Hunger Games franchise. As they say in CALIFUK, so you believe, so you see—Claflin will portray working class soccer star Robin Friday in the cult hero’s eponymous biopic, currently in production. And if you’re dropping quid on outcomes, keep tabs on this charismatic bloke—reports say that when he first met actress Laura Haddock, he immediately told his agent, “That’s the girl I’m gonna marry.” The couple married in a private ceremony in 2013. He shoots he—ah, never mind.

*Starring Danny DeVito and Bette Midler as “nefarious bon bons,” Ruthless (1986) earned comparison to a Billy Wilder teleplay with the unexpected juxtaposition of empathetic kidnappers and vicious victims. But the ending just wasn’t “ruthless enough” for the Times.
