Francia Raisa Graduates to College on New Show Grown-ish
Launching into stardom on ABC Family’s progressive high school drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Francia Raisa is back in another TV series. But this time, she’s headed to college in her new gig on Black-ish spin-off show, Grown-ish.
"I’m just a college girl from Miami that left home and is trying to figure life out, outside of her parents," Raisa says of her role of Ana Torres on Grown-ish. There are parts of Ana that she truly connects with.
Having never attended college herself, Raisa had to do a bit of studying. “A lot of stuff I asked my sister about because she went [to college]. But I know what it’s like to leave home and fend for yourself and not rely on Mommy or Daddy. Funny enough, I’m 29 playing a college student. I’ve gone through a lot of firsts in life, and that’s basically what college is: learning to be an adult. I didn’t have to do too much research. I just had to reflect on my own life.”
Not only is Raisa passionate about her own progress in the industry but she also hopes to pave a path for other hopeful Latin American actresses. Rasia recently attended “Latinas Who Lunch,” a #fiercelylatina luncheon spearheaded by stars America Ferrera, Gina Rodriguez, and Eva Longoria. This meeting brought together Latin women of different backgrounds to discuss their role as women of color in Hollywood.
“I’m embarrassed to say this but I’ve been in this business for 12 years, and I only knew two people in that room,” says Raisa about the luncheon. “We tend to get a little competitive and catty because there are very few roles for us [to claim],” she tells me. “But now there’s a change happening, we’re all supporting each other and pushing each other towards progress, and I’m just so honored and grateful to be a part of this sisterhood that is forming.”
