When in the midst of a rigorous, routine schedule, a break from the norm is a treat. The sentiment was shared by John Mayer last night (July 26) in Los Angeles, where the singer-songwriter performed an abbreviated version of his The Search For Everything tour (he's currently selling out arenas nightly across the US) at small L.A. venue Echoplex ahead of several upcoming California concerts.

The Bud Light-sponsored event was the latest in their Bud Light Dive Bar Tour. Stars like singer Jhene Aiko, her rap star boyfriend Big Sean, actor Miles Teller and G-Eazy watched Mayer play songs from his new album The Search For Everything and his classic cuts “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” and “Waiting On The World To Change” with his band. Alt-R&B songstress Alessia Cara joined him on stage, coming out with a strong cover of Erykah Badu’s “On & On.” Then the pair turned John’s bluesy “Gravity” into a duet.

“I’m glad Bud Light was able to put this on and allow me to play with an amazing singer like Alessia Cara,” Mayer said after the show. “I had a blast playing with a brilliant young singer like her.”

For an encore—or Johncore as his fans called it, Mayer took requests, two of which were songs he hadn’t performed in ages. Looking toward the roof, as if trying the find the lyrics to them, John was able to cruise through a verse of both. “After playing to some huge crowds all summer,” John said, “it was really cool to come play a show in a dive bar here in LA.” Then he wrapped with “3x5” from his debut album Room For Squares before thanking the crowd, taking a bow and getting back to regularly scheduled programming.
