Joanna Newsom Tours the West Coast in Support of 2015’s Divers

We caught a performance by the folk fairy princess and it was every bit as magical as we had hoped
There are few things that are allowed to be as devoid of irony or self-deprecation in 2016 as Joanna Newsom. Her performance last Friday and Saturday at the historic Orpheum theater in DTLA—with it's opera boxes and red velvet seats—was an exercise in sincerity, humility, and unabashed beauty.

Newsom is currently meandering up and down the West coast in support of her excellent 2015 album Divers in a mini-tour that will take her from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and back down to end in Big Sur. Divers, written during the honeymoon phase to SNL alum Andy Samberg, departs from her dissection of heartbreak otherwise known as 2010's Have One On Me, to explore instead themes of mortality, and the inevitable sense thereof when you finally find something (or someone) worth living for.
