Los Angeles' FYF Festival with Frank Ocean, Bjork, Solange and More Will Be Live-Streamed
FYF’s origins lie in booking mostly local punk acts at The Echo, to emerging as Los Angeles’ boutique festival with high ambitions. FYF, held in LA’s Exposition Park, draws a loyal and enthusiastic crowd.
Despite its modest origins, the lineup is arguably better than Coachella’s. Headliners this year include Missy Elliott (her only scheduled performance for 2017), Björk, Frank Ocean, and Nine Inch Nails. FYF will be one of Frank Ocean’s first live performances in three years, yet he’s not the only draw to the festival. Solange, who recently played at Pitchfork music festival, will return to FYF for her third performance. Meanwhile, Kamaiyah, the only female rapper to make XXL’s 2017 Freshman Class, should be on anyone’s to-see list. She’s slated for Outside Lands in August, and her career is sure to continue to take off into fall.
Other notable acts include Flying Lotus (or FlyLo, for short), who’s perhaps most well-known for producing on Kendrick Lamer’s To Pimp a Butterfly, but his experimental multi-genre music makes headlines on its own. A Tribe Called Quest, one of hip-hop’s most legendary groups, will be sure to draw a large crowd.
King Krule, who recently released a song with Mount Kihmbie, also promises to be a great performance. And Whitney and Big Thief, whose debut albums each came out a little over a year ago, are must-sees for indie-rock lovers.
Though the lesser-known counterpart to Coachella, FYF is by no means lacking in its lineup. Exposition Park will be filled with music-loving Angelinos this weekend. And for those who can't make it, we sure hope you've got a Twitter account. If so, go here on Saturday and Sunday to catch sets from your favorites.
