Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci, and Ryne Estwing of ON AN ON not only make music--their dreamy Drifting Remix EP came out last month--they love music. Drifiting Remix has won attention for its strong songwriting and range.
Drifting Remix EP features four different remixes of the song "Drifting"--from their newest full-length album And The Wave Has Two Sides--done by four other artists.
We asked ON AN ON to contribute a few images for our "What's In Yr Fridge?" series, this is what we got instead.
1. ON AN ON - "Drifting - RAC Mix"
-- Besides the obvious reasons for having this in the mix, RAC did one of the tricks I love most about remixing -- he changed the structure of the song. He also added instrumentation and in general created a really great, relaxed remix for ON AN ON.
2. Florence + The Machine - "What Kind Of Man - Nicolas Jaar Remix"
-- I'm a huge fan of Nicolas Jaar. This 12 minute goliath has such a great build at the beginning and such a great bass line that it's too hard to ignore. Also, Florence Welch's voice reimagined inside of Nicolas Jaar's musical atmosphere is pure genius.
3. José González - "Killing For Love - Todd Terje Brokeback Mix"
-- Two Scandinavian giants in the music world get involved together like this and you have a remix that's too big to fail. All the organic elements are amazing plus it makes you move.
4. Jessie Ware - "Running - Disclosure Remix"
--Alright so we've increased the BPMS at this point. The original is fantastic (Jessie Ware's Running) and Disclosure has such a good idea for accessible dance music as they successfully reimagined this song.
5. Metronomy - "The Bay - 2 Bears Remix"
-- Most of the list has collaborations where the remixer and artist are both favorites of mine. Metronomy and The 2 Bears make great records and The 2 Bears know how to get people to dance. You always want more of that chorus from The Bay so this was pretty satisfying.
6. ON AN ON - "It's Not Over - The Twelves Remix"
-- The Twelves always deliver. Ever since I heard The Black Kids's I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You I was floored by these remixers. They re-imagined It's Not Over into a disco-sweat-soaked track that makes you move. Whatever The Twelves touch turns to gold.
7. Hot Chip - "How Do You Do? - Todd Terje remix"
-- As you can see I'm a huge fan of Todd Terje and Hot Chip also has a special place in my heart so this collaboration was a shoe-in. The synth work from Terje (as always) is mesmerizing and nostalgic.
8. YACHT - "Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire) - The Emperor Machine Remix"
-- I first heard my friend Kywo spin this remix at Schubas in Chicago and it blew me away. The remix does a great job increasing what YACHT already has to offer -- incredibly fun electro pop dance punk.
9. Midnight Magic - "Beam Me Up - Jacques Renault Remix"
-- The piano line's entrance is so satisfying. Morgan Wiley's vocals wail on this song as well.
10. Gorillaz, Neneh Cherry - "Kids With Guns - Hot Chip Remix"
-- Alright slowing things back down now. I'm a sucker for good downtempo electronica music and this remix nails it with a great sense of development and control.
11. The xx - "Chained - John Talabot and Pional Blinded Remix"
-- Once again a great long build and it's downtempo which makes perfect sense with the xx. But this remix almost sounds more like an original of John Talabot's with The xx featured on vocals which I think is one of the marks of a successful remix.
