From the dawn of the label by the notorious Belgian designer and his partner Jenny Meirens in 1988, Maison Martin Margiela has become one of the most acclaimed fashion houses today.  The fashion house has been known to be secretive in their way of publicity and fame. Now for the first time, Meirens and the members of the creative team are giving insight into the genesis and are pulling back the curtains on one of the most esteemed fashion labels of our time.

To showcase the work behind creating the world-renowned label a film, titled We Margiela, is being made to investigate the legacy of Maison Martin Margiela. The documentary is being created by Rotterdam’s Mint Film Office and will feature interviews by many involved in the birth of the label.

They talk extensively about the creative process and unique philosophies of the Maison. The film analyzes the ideas of creativity, authorship, and financial returns during the harsh times for the label. The house was run on the intuition of the founders, Margiela and Meirens— who stopped speaking after their retirement. Both had a deep loyalty to taking creative risks.

Meirens, who passed away earlier this year in July, stated, “When you want to please others and everyone, you will get nowhere. I think you have to diversify yourself from others. In the long run, it will give you the freedom not to answer to the system.”

The late Jenny Meirens stayed in the shadows most of her career, the documentary describes how she remained unseen and unknown to many. After passing she was praised for her astonishing work creating the fashion house. We Margiela will premiere on Sunday October 22, 2017 at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and LatarenVenster in Rotterdam
