The Met Gala’s 2018 theme has been announced and it’s bound to earn its share of controversy. “Fashion and Religion” is set as the gala’s subject, and while conversation-starting themes have been set in the past (like China: Through the Looking Glass), this theme is by far the most divisive yet.
Despite the challenging topic, religion and fashion have flirted with one another on the runway for years. Designers that have sourced religion for couture inspiration include Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolce and Gabbana, and Christian Lacroix to name a few. Embellishments, intricate embroidery, and lots and lots of gold will undeniably rule the gala’s red carpet looks.
Will the 2018 Met Gala seamlessly infuse the relationship between fashion and religion? We have a few months before the answer reveals itself.
